Film > Digital

For the longest time I argued that digital is just as good as film photography. I was wrong.

Recently I've shot a few rolls of film on my medium format Fuji GW690ii. Aka the Texas Leica. The camera is a beast. It's heavy, clunky, slow, fully manual, no light meter. I mean a dinosaur. But oh lord does it produce rich and intense dynamic range. The photos have this feel and warm you just can't get with digitial, no matter how much you fuss with digital raw files in Lightroom.

All that said, and for all its positives, I'm not sure how much I'll actually shoot with film. Mainly because it's so pricey (it's about $3 a photo after film and processing costs). It's also so time consuming. Still, there is nothing more magical than getting back those negatives and seeing what a wonderful photo you made.

Happy New Year!

I've never been a huge fan of Januaray 1st as the "new year". For me it's always felt like post Labor Day signaled its start. A reset. A chance to get going again. Maybe it harkens back to my school days. Or maybe it's been honed by the fact that living in NYC, the city recovers from its summer malaise in September. Whatever the reason I've always liked September as a trigger to kick things into gear.

That's why I'm using it as a chance to restart my blog. I want to write more here. I want to mail more letters to friends and loved ones (remember doing that — let's bring it back!). I want to shoot more photographs of things I love and not care if anyone sees them or not. But mostly I want to connect with myself and my amazing group of friends more. Either here on this blog or in real life. I hope you'll come along for the ride.
