Strong Opinions @marksbirch: Getting Promoted Too Quickly

“He’s a star. Thank god he’s on the team”.

“He’s not scaling, it’s time to find his replacement”.

I’ve heard that line from too many CEOs about someone on their management team.

In a hyper growth company, those two sentences can be just a year or two apart…

I hate the term “scaling” when applied to people.  Companies scale, technologies scale, but that does not really apply in the same sense to people.  It is quite a dehumanizing take on the question of people and the work they do.

Mark has been writing killer posts lately. He summed up perfectly what I wanted to though struggled to articulate about Bijan’s post. Mind you I agree with Bijan’s post, though I too despise the word “scale” when it comes to people. It’s cold. I understand why VCs obsess over scale, they need to. I’m a people person (and certainly not a VC) therefore, I tend to cringe when I hear the word associated with a person’s development.
