Relative Pitch: Live On Letterman

Do you know about this? I didn’t.

I literally had no idea this has been happening. And it looks like it’s been happening for a while now, too. There are 17 of them in total. I watched the one with Ryan Adams the other day and he blew me away. And to think I almost missed it. There is just so much competition for listening time now it’s easy to see how something like that could happen.

We don’t live in a time where it’s The Beatles on Ed Sullivan and that’s it.

We’ve got hundreds upon hundreds of choices now. From YouTube, to a plethora of music services, to the bands themselves broadcasting tracks on their sites. Music is indeed ubiquitous. It’s almost overwhelming in some ways. You don’t know where to start.

I discovered the Ryan Adams concert when it popped up in my Tumblr feed (though with Tumblr you miss a lot, too). I commend CBS radio for doing this. Sure, it’s a vehicle for bigger, more well known acts, but it’s still a great treat for a music fan. They probably don’t get a ton of return off it either, and yet it’s there. Kudos.

Seeing this got me to thinking about Live from Daryl’s House. There’s a good chance you never even heard of it, right? It’s what it says it is – Live music from Daryl Hall’s house. He has musicians come over and plays with them. It’s phenomenal. You really need to be checking some of these out. And like Live On Letterman he’s probably not seeing a ton of financial return from it. He’s doing it mostly because he loves music. Especially playing it.

You should check them both out. I think you’ll dig them.
